Webinar on ‘Role of Journalism in Indian Democracy and Society’ organized by the School of Mass Communication

The School of Mass Communication organized an interactive webinar on the topic ‘Role of Journalism in Indian Democracy and Society’ as part of the SOMC webinar series on November 5. 

 

Prof. K. G. Suresh, Vice-Chancellor, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal, MP, and former Director-General of Indian Institute of Mass Communication, was the eminent guest invited to speak at the event.  The webinar was also successfully live-streamed on our IMS Unison University Facebook page. 

 

The session began with the introduction of Prof. K.G. Suresh who has decades of experience behind him. Prof. Suresh initiated his lecture with a conversation on the history of Journalism in India and its role in the freedom struggle. He spoke about Vernacular Press and its growth, and the qualities of a journalist. He mentioned journalist Arun Shourie, his role in Investigative Journalism, and his impact on society. He spoke about iconic journalist P. Sainath and urged students to read his book ‘Everybody Loves a Good Drought.’, based on research on poverty in rural India.

  

Prof. Suresh encouraged the students to have an inquisitive mind and be knowledgeable about the history of journalism and the Indian Constitution. He said that they should also keep themselves updated with new technologies as it has become a vital communication tool and an important resource while reporting from the field. 

 

The session then proceeded with a Q&A session where Prof. Suresh answered the queries of the students. He wished the students good luck for their future and asked them to connect with him through various social media platforms. The webinar then concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Nungshi Singha. Overall, it was an informative session for students of SOMC.
